The Masque Ekekek is originating in the ethnic group Fang in the area of the Woleu-Ntem (Gabon).

Origin

Description

The mask represented above is a 48 cm height for a width of 27 cm and a 23 cm depth. It is white, red and black.

It is cut in tender wood and its cap is made feathers and its costume of woven Raphia.

Use

This mask is carried for the dance of the same name " Ekekek " in Woleu-Ntem. The dance " Ekekek " is a Danse of entertainment which takes place of day, in the court of the village, to frighten the women and the children. It occurs only for this purpose. It is carried out on a music of percussion instruments.

A standard mask in the same way appears in the dance " Minkuk " Estuary, Means-Ogooué and Ogooué-Ivindo. The dancer, a man, imitates an alarming being evolving/moving with a saber out of wooden.
