The Masque Bodie is originating in the ethnic group Pové in the area of the Ogooué-Milk (Gabon).

Origin

Each village has its mask which bears a particular name. It is the Nzobè clan which created this mask.

Description

The upper part of the mask on the photograph above measures approximately 1 m and its circumference is of 2 Mr. the height until the hairstyle of feathers corresponds to the intermediate size of a man (approximately 1,60 m).

It is manufactured with Raphia and " musètè ", a liana which pushes in the primary forest. The fabrics of color red and black which crown the upper part of it consist of colored raffia, and are decorated of Coquillage S. the feathers placed on the head are those of the eagle, called " mbéla " in pové.

Use

This mask is the business of the men.

It is raised the evening, in the village, during the ceremonies organized at the time of a burial or arrival of an important personality.

It can be used to protect from the Sorcier the children of a woman who lost some in low age.
