Badonviller is a common French, located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the area Lorraine.

Geography

Badonviller is located on the first buttresses of the Massif of the Vosges, on the shortest way of Nancy to Strasbourg, at about fifteen kilometers of Baccarat and at about thirty Lunéville.

The commune is crossed by an affluent of the Vezouze called the Blette.

History

Created at the time Gallo-Roman, Badonviller was a fortified town as of the 13th century. Dismantled during the War Thirty Year old, it was capital county of Salm-in-Vosge then of the Principauté of Salm. In 1751, the residence of the princes and the capital of the principality were transferred to Senones, Badonviller remaining chief town of the county for little time, this last being integrated into the duchy of Lorraine.

Badonviller paid a heavy tribute with the two last world wars. Important combat were held in February - March 1915 with the collar of Chapelotte with Angomont; the memorial was drawn up in Badonviller.

It is also one of the 64 common Frenchwomen decorated with the Legion of Honor:

- April 20th, 1929 - having had to support at the beginning of the hostilities the sufferings of the occupation, and the systematic destruction of the invader, could preserve then, during many bombardments which followed one another until the armistice, a stoical courage in the middle of the deprivations of all kinds, and the continual danger, thus proving the untameable energy of its inhabitants and their faith in the victory.

Formerly existed a factory of faience manufacture now closed and the textile was an industry développée.

Economy

Badonviller as all Lorraine like the part of Belgium which is in its prolongation was an important center of production of Céramique and of Faïence. Of this past a museum of earthenware remains now.

Famous characters

One of the most famous characters of Badonviller is without any doubt the astronomer Charles Messier large discoverer of celestial bodies.
