Zytglogge

The Zytglogge in Bernese dialect (German Zeitglockenturm) or Tour of the Clock to Bern is a astronomical Horloge of XVIe century comprising a Jacquemart and a Carillon.

Astronomical dial

  • the hand indicates the position of the sun (on the left for the east, in top in the south, on the right for the west),

  • a black ball and gold shows the phases of the moon.

  • a rotary dial indicates the signs of the Zodiaque.

Chime

On the line of the dial the chime is which starts each hour, 4 minutes before the full hour.

An insane makes resound small bells, the number of blows indicates the next hour, however that a round of 7 bears starts to turn, appearing during the days of the week: the first bear assembling a horse symbolizes Sunday, it is followed by 6 bears (Monday to Saturday) each one representing a different trade.

It will be noticed that the fourth bear, when it leaves, turns the head. It symbolizes Wednesday, the turning of the week .
