Old and arm of the North Sea of Belgium Netherlands, it separated the Belgian territory Littoral from the continent. The current coast is the shore Western of this island. Zwin is the largest salted territory of Belgium. Mudholes and pre salted, behind the beach and the dunes, partially or are completely flooded by the sea with High tide.
It is about a single Biotope for many Oiseau X and Plante S.
The Belgo-Dutch border crosses natural reserve, it is marked out by two boundary stones.
Fauna
Each year of the thousands of birds come in Zwin to nest, winter or seek food. One finds the ashy Héron there, the Avocette, the Busard of the reeds… The storks, they, nest each year in the reserve.- the birds

Flora
One finds many indigenous species. These plants are subject to the permanent influence of salted sea water. For this reason they are untraceable in other parts of the littoral.

These plants are the Salicorne, Obione portulacoides false pourpier and other plants which are typical salt meadow lambs.
- a very rare flower pushes in the reserve. It is the statice of the silts or Zwinneblomme. Gathered, these flowers form a purple carpet.
