Zweigelt

The zweigelt is a Cépage of black grapes.

Origin and geographical distribution

The type of vine is obtaining Friedrich Zweigelt in the institute Bundesversuchsanstalt für Wein- und Obstbau Klosterneuburg with Klosterneuburg. The genetic cause is checked and it is a crossing of the type of vines Blaufränkisch X Saint Laurent carried out in 1922.

The zweigelt is recommended in Austria or it covers 4350 hectares.

The type of vine is authorized in some Länder in Germany. It is cultivated in Great Britain and Slovakia.

Friedrich Zweigelt was member of the Parti national-Socialist the German workers. The type of vine would have been developed to return Austria independent of coloured red wine supply of Italian or different source.

Characters ampelographic

  • End of the young glabrous branch, bronzed.
  • adult Sheets, with 3 lobes, a petiolar sine in quadrant, ogival teeth.

Farming aptitudes

Maturity is of first average time: 10 days after the chasselas.

Technological potential

The bunches are average with large and the bays are of intermediate size. The bunch is winged and compact. The type of vine is not very sensitive to the diseases and supports the frosts well. It offers large outputs.

The zweigelt is known under the names of blauer Zweigelt, rotburger, zweigelt blau and Zweigeltrebe.
