Zvečan

Zvečan , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Звечан and in Albanian sq Zveçan or sq Zveçani, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of the Kosovo. They belong to the district of Kosovska Mitrovica. In 1991, the municipality counted: 10030 inhabitants, of which: 7591 Serb (75,7%). In 2006, with the refugees, the population was estimated at: 16600 inhabitants.

The town of Zvečan is located close to Kosovska Mitrovica, on the edges of the Ibar.

History

The city is mentioned for the first time in connection with the frontier conflicts which opposed the Serbes and the Byzantine between 1091 and 1094. After the victory of the Byzantines, in 1170, Stefan Nemanja ordered prayers in the églige Saint-Georges de Zvečan. From this time, in the upper town, one currently finds the vestiges of this church Saint Georges, as well as a cistern and an octagonal tower which defended the ramparts.

Demography

In November 2005, one estimated that the municipality was populated to 95% of Serb of Kosovo. Approximately: 4000 Serb are taken refuge in this municipality.

Culture

In Zvečan the Faculty of the Art schools of the University of Priština is installed.

The city organizes each year a jazz festival.
