Zuyderzée

The Zuyderzée (or Zuyder-zée ) is old a French Département which existed between 1811 and 1814. Its chief town was Amsterdam.

History

The department of Zuyderzée was created on January 1st, 1811 following the annexation of the Royaume of Holland by the First Empire French on July 9th, 1810.

It was dissolved after the defeat of Napoleon {{Ier}} in 1814. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the corresponding territory was integrated into the the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Geography

The name of the department comes from the Zuiderzee, gulf barred since 1932 by a dam ( Afsluitdijk ) and from now on partially drained, which extended on a broad part is department. Zuidersée was mainly located on a peninsula extending between the the North Sea at the west and the gulf from Zuiderzee at the east, but also included/understood some of the islands of Plank-Western the.

The current territory of the old department is located in the Netherlands and corresponds more or less to that of the provinces of Holland-Septentrional and Utrecht.
