The project was presented in 1874, and the park inaugurated the November 11th 1875, with a zoological section. Initially state-owned property, the park was transferred in 1888 to the municipality from Buenos Aires. The intendant of the city, Antonio Crespo, separated the animalist garden from the remainder of the park, and thus created the zoo of Buenos Aires.
The first director was Eduardo Holmberg, indicated in 1888, which occupied this station during 15 years. Holmberg was charged to project the plan of the various parks, lakes and gone, and began the exposure of the animals, which were at the beginning 650. At that time, the zoos did not have the same function as today. Their function simply consisted in being an entertaining walk, from where the garden counted little space for the animals, and much for the relaxation and the walk of the visitors. The architecture of the buildings which lodged the animals corresponded to that of the country of origin of those. Therefore they represent an inheritance of value (Historic building).
Clementi Onelli was director of 1904 with 1924, and gave a great impulse to the Jardín Zoológico . Onelli added a didactic aspect to the pure zoological exhibition. Moreover it introduced the walks in Poney S, elephant S and Chameau X, which increased by 10 times the number of visitors at the beginning of his management.
From the medium of the XXe century, the zoo started to fall in stagnation, which gave to some the idea of privatization.
