The Zoo of Basle , in Suisse is the oldest zoological garden of the country.
In 1870, the company of ornithology had the idea of an animalist park where one could admire animals autochtones of Europe and the Alps.
The town of Basle took part in this project and placed at its disposal, with the limit of the city, a ground appropriate to Birsigtal .
July 3rd, 1874, took place the inauguration of Zolli , as one calls the park in Basle familiarly, and it attracts as of the beginning a crowd the curious one.
One found there ponds with the waders and the water birds most various, of the raptors, a pheasantry, a hut with wild boars, installations in the star shape for stags, buffaloes and dashes and a construction for the owls.
A completely particular attraction: the House of the carnivores : wolf, lynx, badger, fox, wildcat and marten.
Other centers of interest: the bear pit, the rock with chamois and capridés and the basin with the otters and the beavers.
The restaurant had not been even forgotten: a construction with half-timberings decorated with wood with stag, and having a terrace open or closed according to time.
