Zone of local government

A zone (or area, county) of local government (in English: Local Government Area shortened a LGA -), name used in Australia, especially by the Australian Office of the Statistics, is an administrative unit managed by a " government local" . Australia is a federation of states (Victoria, Queensland) and Territories (Territory of North, Territoire of the capital of Australia) but there is no official cutting in lower part; certain states are completely cut out in counties, others not. The names of LGA are classified according to the states and their characteristics; one can thus find Areas ( Region ), Comtés ( Shire ), Villes ( Town ), Cités ( Cities ), Municipalités ( Municipalities ), Arrondissements ( Borough ), etc… (see Ci below). For example, the local government area off the Mornington Shire , the local government of the county of Mornington, island of Queensland. Many a LGA in News-Wales of the South does not have any more a classifier such as Comté or Municipality, but one speaks quite simply about Conseil ( Council ). One says: Manly Council or Waverley Council . It is about a characteristic of the Australian language where the name Council indicates an administrative unit whereas in the other anglophone countries this word designates only the elected officials who deal with the businesses of the local government.

The creation and delimitation of the areas " LGA" is responsibility for the government of the State or Territory. In all the states and the Territoire of North each LGA has its official statute. The various types of LGA are the following:

  • New Wales of the South: Cities (C) and Areas (A)

  • Victoria: Cities (C), Rural Cities (RC), Boroughs (B) and Shires (S)
  • Queensland: Cities (C), Shires (S), Towns (T) and Island Councils (IC)
  • southernmost Australia: Cities (C), Rural Cities (RC), Municipalities/Municipal Councils (M), Councils District (DC), Regional Councils (RegC) and Aboriginal Councils (AC)
  • Western Australia: Cities (C), Towns (T) and Shires (S)
  • Tasmanie: Cities (C) and Municipalities (M)
  • Territory of North: Cities (C), Towns (T), Community Government Councils (CGC) and Shires (S).

The Territory of the Australian capital, the Territory of Jervis Bay and the territories external do not have areas under local government distinct from the government of their Territory.
