Zierikzee

Zierikzee is a city Dutchwoman, located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. At January 1st, 2006, Zierikzee counted 10.658 inhabitants.

History

The old sources make go up Zierikzee at the 10th century. Since 1248, the city has many privileges and franknesses ( stadsrechten ). At the end of the the Middle Ages, Zierikzee was one of the most important cities of the Zealand.

It was vainly besieged in 1300 by the Flemings, who were beaten there on sea in 1304 by the French. Taken by the Spaniards in 1676, it was taken again shortly after.

Of 1810 with 1814, Zierikzee was sub-prefecture of the French Département Mouth-in-the Scheldt.

Zierikzee was an independent commune until in 1997. In this year, all the communes of the islands of Schouwen and Duiveland amalgamated, to form a new commune, Schouwen-Duiveland. Zierikzee is the chief town.
