Ziegfeld Madnesses

Ziegfeld Follies is also a film of 1946 inspired of this review.

---- The Ziegfeld Follies are a series of theatrical productions of Broadway to New York of 1907 with 1931. It became a radio program in 1932 and 1936 with The Ziegfeld Follies off the Air .

Inspired by the Madnesses Shepherdesses of Paris, Ziegfeld Follies were conceived and created by Florenz Ziegfeld, according to the idea of his wife at the time, the actress Anna Held. The spectacle was produced by Klaw & Erlanger.

History

The Madnesses were re-examined sumptuous, a mixture of the future spectacles of Broadway and a spectacle-variety of Vaudeville more refined. Several of the best actors of the time (including Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Bert Williams, Will Rogers, Ruth Etting, Helen Morgan, Marilyn Miller, W.C. Fields, ED Wynn, Nora Bayes, and others) appeared in the spectacle. Ziegfeld Follies are also famous for their splendid cabaret dancers known under the name of Ziegfeld girls (which, with the passing of years, saw in its rows of future stars like Marilyn Miller, Marion Davies, Mae Murray, Paulette Goddard, Joan Blondel, Nita Naldi, Dorothy Mackaill, Eve Arden, Billie Dove, Gilda Gray, Barbara Stanwyck, Cyd Charisse and Louise Brooks. (Norma Shearer and Alice Faye was refused, not being " with niveau"). The girls carried usually refined costumes of the designer Erté, which could become the principal subject for conversation of the theater of Broadway the days which followed.

After the death of Ziegfeld, its widow Billie Burke authorized the use of her name for Ziegfeld Follies in 1934 and 1936. The name, later, was used by promoters of New York, Philadelphia and still with Broadway, but without precise relationships to the original Madnesses. These last efforts were a disaster. When later she travelled, the edition of 1934 was recorded in its totality, since the opening to its fence, on discs 78 turns, which were published by the producer David Cunard in order to form an album of the best moments of the production. This album left in 1997 on CD.

The winner of the Oscar of the best film in 1936 was Large Ziegfeld, with William Powell in first role and Myrna Loy at his sides (as a second woman of Ziegfeld, Billie Burke), Luise To groove (Anna Held, which gained the Oscar of the best actress) and Frank Morgan (the rival). The film gives an outline of what the Madnesses were really. There was also in 1946 a film entitled Ziegfeld Follies , with in particular Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, William Powell, Gene Kelly, Fanny Brice, Red Skelton, Esther Williams, Cyd Charisse, Lucille Ball and Kathryn Grayson, which shows songs and spectacles similar to those of the Madnesses.
