The Zhejiang (浙江 Zhèjiāng in Mandarin, Tzekkan in local language tsəʔkɑ̃ /) coastal province is a Chinese in the South of Shanghai. Zhejiang is richest of the Chinese Provinces (account not held of the municipalities of (Tianjin, Beijing and Shanghai).

Geography

The mountains and the hills represent 70,4  %; plains and basins, important especially in North 23,2  %; rivers and lakes, 6,4  % of the 104.000km ² of the province. Its coast, cut out, is longest of China (6  486  km), it includes/understands many islands of which Zhoushan, the vaster third of the country, and 3  060 others of a surface higher than 500  m ².

The climate is subtropical and wet. The area is exposed to the typhoons.

Administrative divisions

The province counts eleven prefectures:

  • Jiaxing (嘉兴市 Jiāxīng Shì)
  • Zhoushan (舟山市 Zhōushān Shì)
  • Ningbo (宁波市 Níngbō Shì)
  • Shaoxing (绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì)
  • Quzhou (衢州市 Qúzhōu Shì)
  • Jinhua (金华市 Jīnhuá Shì)
  • Taizhou (台州市 Tāizhōu Shì) and not tái
  • Wenzhou (温州市 Wēnzhōu Shì)
  • Lishui (丽水市 Líshuǐ Shì) and not lì

Emigration

Most of the Chinese immigrants in France comes from this area, and more particularly from the town of Wenzhou (温州). The first Chinese immigrants in France, enlisted to work in camps during the First World War, came from this province.

Languages

The dialects of this province belong to the group wu (吴), except that of Hangzhou which is a dialect Mandarin imported in the middle of the Dynastie Song (宋).

The dialect of Hangzhou is officially grouped in the wu group, although it has some of the characteristics of the language of North, because it keeps as many sound consonants and gets along with the other dialects wu, different from the modern Mandarin dialects.

Economy

Zhejiang is richest of the Chinese Provinces. One speaks sometimes about an economic model of Zhejiang: it combines public infrastructures of good quality and a broad place granted on the initiative individual and to the small company.

The caterpillars of silkworm which live in cocoons and nourissent mulberry trees make the fortune of the southernmost province of Zhejiang.

Tourism

The town of Hangzhou, chief town of province, is a city which preserved a traditional architecture, does of them one of the preferred tourist destinations of the Chinese and foreign tourists. The Xi Hu (西湖, xī hú , “lake of the west”) located at Hangzhou is the tourist center most known.
