When a term or a name differs between the version Macross and Robotech, it is noted as follows: name Macross ^M/ name Robotech ^R

An extraterrestrial civilization, Protoculture^M/les Masters of Robotech^{R, 1}, created people of slaves by genetic engineering starting from human stocks ²: Zentradiens ( Zentraedi ). So that they can assume the most possible tasks, they can take a gigantic size or a human size. Initially conceived for the manual duties, they were transformed into warriors in order to fight the threat of another populate, the Army of Supervision^M/les Invids^R.

To make effective and faithful machines of war of them, civilization Protoculture^M/les Maîtres of Robotech^R create them by cloning and condition them as of their childhood. The males (or zentrans) are separated from the females (or meltrans), and so that they do not procreate in a natural way, males and females are high in a reciprocal hatred.

Not having technical education nor of scientific culture, they are unable to manufacture or repair their material.

But in spite of this conditioning, they have a human nature all the same; to prevent that they do not take their independence, any feeling is thus punished of death.

Zentradiens regard civilization Protoculture^M/les Maîtres of Robotech^R as gods; the only goal of their existence is to die in the combat.

In the line Macross , civilization is called Protoculture (the term “Masters of Robotech” does not appear); in the line Robotech , civilization is called “the Masters of Robotech” and the protoculture is simply the energy source developed by the Master of Robotech named Zor.
the Masters of Robotech/la Protoculture thus knew the Earth at the time of human prehistory.
