Zeitz is a town of Germany, in Saxony-Anhalt. It is sprinkled by the Elster-White, and counts 29.197 inhabitants (2005).

It was mentioned for the first time under the name of Cici with the synod of Ravenne of 967. Between 965 and 982, it constituted the principal fortress of the Marche of Zeitz.

Of 968 with 1028, Zeitz was a episcopal residence, before this one is not tranferrée with Naumbourg, but the bishops re-examined to reside in their castle of Zeitz starting from the end of the 13th century.

Maurice of Saxony (1619-1681) was made duke of Saxony-Zeitz , and founded this branch junior by the Maison of Wettin. It died out in 1759.
