Zazpiak Beats
Zazpiak Bat is an expression Basque which means “the Seven do One”, of zazpi (“seven”), ak (“them”) and beats (“one”). It refers to the seven historical provinces of the Pays Basque.
It is also the name Héraldique armorial bearings of the Basque Country including the seven following provinces: on the one hand the four Spanish provinces which are the Alava, the Guipúzcoa, the Biscay (nowadays forming the Basque autonomous Communauté and the province consisted the old kingdom of Navarre (today Navarre), other three French provinces that are the Labourd, the Low-Navarre and the Soule belonging to the Yrénées-Atlantiques. The armorial bearings consist of 6 parts representing each province, Navarre and the Lowone having the same blazon, that of the kingdom of Navarre where the two current provinces were joined together until the beginning of XVIe century.
The Basque autonomous Community has its own armorial bearings, Laurak Bat (“the Four do One”), which go back to its constitution as such after the death of Franco. They are made of four parts of which one among them, uniformly red, symbolizes Navarre, distinct autonomous community but which, according to the Spanish Constitution, can decide by referendum to incorporate itself in it. It is a strong symbol such as the Ikurriña (Basque flag), the Lauburu (cross Basque with commas) and the Arrano beltza (“the black eagle”, flag dating from the Middle Ages).
History
In 1643, a Navarrese, Axular, name the various territories bascophones. It is only at the beginning of the 19th century that a Labourdin young person named Garat proposes with Napoleon i to join together the four Spanish Basque provinces and the three French provinces to give rise to the figure Sept. In 1836, Augustin Chaho and Antoine Thomson d' Abbadie publishes grammatical Études on the language euskarienne (the Basque language) which they dedicate “to the Basques of the 7 provinces”, out of Basque: Zazpi Uskal Herrietako Uskalduner .But it is with Pampelune that the formula Zazpiak Bat was launched for the first time by the Navarrese linguist Arturo Campión Jaimebon in 1876 during the publication of its book Consideraciones acerca of the cuestión foral there los carlistas in Nabarra .
