Zaria but can appear under various names: Saria , Zeg-Zeg , Kala ‑ kala or before Zazzau is one of the main cities of the State de Kaduna in the north of the Nigeria between Kaduna and Kano.

History

Initially named Zazzau , the city is founded towards 1000 by Habe, and is one of the seven city-States Haoussa.

Zaria is conquered by the Peuls in 1805 and is included in the Califat of Sokoto, following an holy war of Usman daN Fodio in Zaria which ends in 1812.

The army Britannique directed by Frederick Lugard seizes the city in 1901. The current emir (" Sarkin Zazzau") of Zazzau, the political leader and monk of Zaria are currently a doctor, Dr. Alhaji Shehu Idris.

Demography

The population estimated in 2006 is of 988.000; at January 1st 2005 it was of 975.228 inhabitants and 612.257 in 1991. The inhabitants of Zaria are essentiellements of religion Musulman E.

Economy

The economic activity is mainly agricultural. The cultivated products are the Maïs of Guinea (" guinea corn"), of the millet, and especially of the Cotton, the Groundnut and the Tobacco. The city is considered by certain as the center of the Agriculture. In fact, Zaria is the seat of the Ahmadu Bello University created in 1962, important a Université of Nigeria and a major agricultural institution.

The historical part of the city is surrounded by walls, and the population generally resides in the enclosure.

Transport

Zaria being located at the north of the junction of the railroad of Kaduna, the city has the access to the seaports of Lagos as well as Port Harcourt.
