Zaporojie (in Ukrainian: Запоріжжя , Zaporijjia , in Russian: Запорожье , Zaporož' E ) is a city located in the south-east of the Ukraine, on the Dniepr, in the Oblast de Zaporijjia of which it is the capital.
History
The island Khortytsia, opposite the modern part of Zaporojie, was one of the historical sites of the Sitch zaporogue, principal the Forteresse and capital of the republic Cosaque of Viys' KB Zaporiz' ke.
Zaporijjia was called a long time Alexandrovsk, of the name of the commander of the first Russian army, the prince Alexandre Mikhaïlovitch Golitsyne. In
1921, it was renamed Zaporijjia, which means " behind the cataractes" , in reference to the falls of Dniepr close to the Khortytsia island.
Population
Zaporijjia is the sixth Ukrainian city, with a population estimated at 790 000 inhabitants (
2007).
Economy
Zaporijjia is an important industrial center since the startup of the powerplant of Dniepr, in
1932. Its principal industrial sites sont :
- Nuclear plant of Zaporijjia ;
- Hydroelectric station of Dniepr: DnieproGuES ;
- ZAZ : principal car manufacturer of Ukraine ;
- Motor-Sitch : principal manufacturer of engines of planes and helicopters and industrial gas turbines of Ukraine (cf also the airline company Motor Sich).
