Zapoliarny

Zapoliarny (in Russian: Заполя́рный) is a city of the Oblast de Mourmansk, in Russia. It is located in the Péninsule of Cola, to 103 km in the North-West of Mourmansk and to 11 km of the Norwegian border . Its population rose with: 18640 inhabitants with the census of 2002 against: 23564 inhabitants with the census of 1989.

The area where Zapoliarny is belonged to the Finland of 1920 with 1944. In 1956, a locality was created under the name of Jdanovsk (Жда́новск). It received the statute of city in 1963 and took the name of Zapoliarny then.

In 1940 was founded in Poliarny the combine Petchenganikel (Печенганикель) for the exploitation of copper and nickel. It forms today part of the group Norilsk Nickel.

The major Cola drilling, or Hole sg3, is close to Zapoliarny. It is about a scientific project of the Soviet Union, which began the May 24th 1970. The objective was to carry out a major drilling reaching the Earth's crust. In 1989, depth of: 12262 m were reached.
