Zamość

Zamość (Al: Himmlerstadt ) is a city in Eastern Poland, with the borders of the plate of Lublin and of Roztocze, Zamość is in edge of the Labunka river. It is also on trade route which connects the north and the west of the Europe to the Black Sea.

Historical reference marks

The Poland knows its apogee in XVIe century, under the last kings Jagellon. Its territory increases: the Eastern Prussia (1525), the Mazovie (1526), the Livonie and the Latvia (1561), the Courlande (1562) and the Lithuania (1569). Its cities open out within the framework of the Renaissance.

After the extinction of the dynasty (1572), the kingdom is elective. In the instigation of Zamoyski, the nobility, which affirmed with difficulty its privileges in XVe century, takes part from now on in the royal election. With the high clergy, it has the monopoly of the land and buildings.

Jan Zamoyski (1541-1605) is tycoon, politician and humanistic. Zamosc is its personal creation. The city, established on its private field, is designed at ends of trade and personal residence; it raises its palate there. The urban project takes form in nine years (1582-1591). Fortifications surround the unit. In 1594, Zamoyski there founds an Academy, centers Polish culture.

At the end of XVIe century, the country enters a long decline. Zamosc will be besieged on several occasions with XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries.

Urban morphology

Inside the initial fortifications, the urban provision, conceived by the Italian Bernardo Morando, is very structured. At the west the palate of Zamoyski is located and with the east the city with its places and its regular layout, aired, which order two axes recutting itself with right angle. New fortifications of the Vauban type, which cut out out of star, are set up at the XVIIe century.

The Renaissance styles, especially, and baroque characterize the architecture of the city which integrates moreover urban traditions of Central Europe. The place of the Grand Market, which the town hall dominates, in is a rich person illustration. Houses with arcades and stone gates, pertaining to the two great styles, border it according to the tradition. One counts several churches with Zamosc, including one splendid collegial (XVIe S.).
