As wire junior by famous ordering William Adama, Zak felt obliged to join the colonial Flotte and to prove its value with his/her father. During its training of pilot of Viper, it fell in love with its instructor with flight Kara Thrace and they became engaged. Although it never knew it, Zak failed several operations during the last part of its training of the flight and obtained its examination only because of its relation with Thrace.
Shortly after its exit of the academy, Zak was killed when it crushed its Viper during its first flight solo, creating a deep wound between his father and his brother Lee, this last believer whom the paternal pressure had led Zak to death.
Although the death of Zak tightened the relationship between William and Lee Adama, it finally reinforced their bonds, returning the father determined not to lose her son surviving: when Thrace was reported missing, Lee required how long his/her father would seek it, if were missing for him. The answer of William Adama was “if it were you… we would never give up”.
