Zaječar , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Зајечар, is a city and a municipality of the East of the Serbia. They are located in the district of Zaječar. The town of Zaječar is the administrative center of the district. In 2002, it counted: 39491 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 65969.
The origin of the name of the Turkish east city probably . In Wallachian, language of a local minority, " Zāii cer" , it means “the gods ask (a sacrifice)”.
Nikola Pašić (1845-1926), which was Prime Minister of Serbia, was born there. Its name is also associated with Svetozar Marković, a Serb Socialist.
Near Zaječar, at the village of Gamzigrad, is the Roman site of Romuliana or Felix Romuliana, a Castrum where was born and was buried the emperor Galère (towards 250 - 311). The site was registered in 2007 on the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO.
