History

Zacatecas were native-born people. The word comes from the Nahuatl zacatecatl which means “the people of grass” (of zacatl , grass and tecatl , people)

The town of Zacatecas was founded in 1546 during the Spanish conquest, when Juan de Tolosa discovered important layers of money.

The city developed enormously and became following the example Guanajuato an important mining center during the 16th century and the 17th century.

This money and that of Potosí in Bolivia enormously enriched Spain and thus allowed him to extend its colonial empire.

In 1914, during the Mexican Revolution, Zacatecas lives bloodiest of the combat of this revolution, in a battle known under the name of Toma de Zacatecas (the catch of Zacatecas) between the federal armies of Victoriano Huerta and the troops constitutionnalists of General Francisco Villa, more known under the name of Pancho Villa. The victory of Villa led at the end of the mode of Huerta. A monument with this battle and the Villa general is drawn up at the top of Cerro of Bufa dominating the city.

Tourism
