Zabrze

History

It is in 1242 that the name of Zabrze is mentioned for the first time, thereafter the city belonged to the state of the Piast, with the Bohemia, the Habsbourg and the Prussia.

Until 1873 Zabrze remained a rural district arising with the district of Opole in the Prussian province of Silesia; it became chief town of a circle then bearing its name, detached of the circle of Beuthen. After the dissolution of the province in November 1919 the district of Opole formed a named distinct province High-Silesia. Of 1915 with 1945 the city, which belonged to Germany, bore the name of Hindenburg O.S. (i.e. Oberschlesien) in homage to the marshal Hindenburg, name still used by the German minority in Poland.

October 1st 1922 the old rural district of Hindenburg O.S. accepted the row of city according to the established rules the May 30th 1853 for the six Eastern provinces of the kingdom of Prussia. January 1st 1927 the circle of Hindenburg O.S was dissolved and the urban community of Hindenburg O.S. formed from now on with the remainder of the circle a new urban circle. The rural district of Sosnitza and its fining were not included/understood there. April 1st 1938 the old Prussian provinces of Low and High-Silesia were again joined together in only one province of Silesia to find once again, the January 18th 1941, their former division. Hindenburg O.S., meanwhile, did not concern any more of the district Opole, but Katowice and was again in High-Silesia.

In spring 1945, the city was occupied by the Red Army and passed thereafter under Polish administration.

Sport

The Gornik Zabrze is the club of Football of Zabrze. The club holds a record of the victories of the Polish championship of football because it gained it with 14 recoveries.
