ZIP (format of file)

See also: Zip

ZIP is a Format of file allowing the Data compression.

The format was invented by Phil Katz for the software PKZIP. It was conceived in answer to a problem of rights between the program PKARC and the format ARC launched by the Software Enhancement Associates . ARC is sold as a Partagiciel mainly to the users of BBS so that they can compress their files more quickly.

Katz decided to cease the development of PKARC and described its own format PKZIP using the Extension of file .zip and the algorithm Deflate.

The format GRAVEL BANK (Java Files) is identical to format ZIP. One can re-elect the files .jar in .zip .
