The protocol Z39.50 is a Communication protocol Informatique Client-serveur to seek through a Data-processing network information in Databases. It is especially used by the Bibliothèque S to question several catalogs simultaneously. Its evolution is coordinated by the Bibliothèque of the Congress of the the United States whose specialized agency animates GUY (Z interest group).

This protocol gave place to the American Norme ANSI /NISO Z39.50 and to the standards ISO 23950.

Since 2001, programs SRU and SRW have the ambition to retranscribe the procedures to make them in conformity with that of the Web. The product is temporarily called Zing (Z new generation). SRU (Search & Retrieve via URLs) employs techniques REST to transcribe the Z39.50 requests in only one URL. On its side, SRW (Search & Retrieve via Webservices) employs a encapsulation SOAP to carry out the same style of work. In both cases, the results are formatted in formats XML.
