Zéphyrin Shoe

Zéphyrin Shoe (or Zepherin Ferrez) (the St. Lawrence on July 31st, 1797 - Rio de Janeiro on July 22nd, 1851). Medaillist, sculptor, engraver and professor. Brother of the sculptor and Marc engraver Shoe (1788-1850) and father of the photographer Marc Ferrez (1848-1923).

Biography

It entered in 1810 to the School of the Art schools, where it studied the sculpture under the direction of Philippe-Laurent Roland (1746-1816) and engraving under that of Pierre Nicolas Beauvallet (1750-1818). In 1816 it left for Brazil with his brother Marc Ferrez (1788-1850) (they probably arrived in September), and they came into contact with the members of the French artistic Mission of which they did not form part in the beginning. The following year, at the time of the festivities which were to accompany the arrival by the princess Leopoldina (1797-1826), it completed decorative work of the streets and the places of Rio de Janeiro with Auguste Marie Taunay (1768-1824), Debret (1768-1848) and Grandjean de Montigny (1776-1850). With Marc Shoe, it carved and decorated in 1818 a cradle supported by two sphinges, offered to Dom Pedro I (1798-1834) at the time of the birth of his/her first daughter, the princess Maria da Glória. This work was worth to him to enter the circle of the artists of Aiba (Imperial Academy of the Art schools), and it accepted a pension of the government by a decree signed in November 1820. In 1820, the honor of the acclamation of Dom João VI (ceremony which had been held two years before) it engraved the medal known as Senatus Fluminense with the avers of which one saw an image of the temple dedicated to Minerve that projected Grandjean de Montigny. In 1822 it carried out a named medal part of crowning: it carried the effigy of dom Pedro Ier and celebrated the foundation of the Empire of Brazil. In 1826, with his brother, it carried out a series of low-reliefs and clay sculptures to decorate the frontage with the building of Aiba, which was officially inaugurated this year. It became there the first official professor of the pulpit of engraving of medals in 1836. It also took part in Exposição Geral de Belas Artes (General Exposure of the Art schools) in 1842 and was decorated with the rank of knight of the Imperial Order of the Rose. The following year it carried out a medal commemorative in homage to the marriage of dom Pedro II with gave Teresa Cristina.
