Zénon Bacq

Zénon Bacq (1903-1983) is a scientist and inventive Belgian and Walloon militant

Biography

The scientist

He became doctor of medicine of ULB in 1927 and aggregate of the ULg in 1933. He made a one year stay to Harvard (1929-1930), exercised mandates FNRS, taught animal physiology, pathology and the therapeutic general ones as well as pharmacology and radiobiology in ULg. Studying the chemical transmissions of the nerve impulse, he invented processes to guard himself against ionizing radiations.

The Price E. Cornez in 1959, then the Prix Francqui in 1948 devote this work in particular the study of the sensitizers to the ions potassium, with the toxicology of gases of war, whose Belgium made the cruel experiment at the time of the First World War.

It is at the base of the Asbl Association for the Diffusion of Sciences (1970-1979), whose Paul Danblon will be the general secretary. The ADS produced mainly programs of medical information in order to popularize knowledge in this field.

Bacq is regarded as having founded the compared Pharmacologie.

The militant

Zénon Bacq was also a militant Walloon. It adheres to the Association for progress intellectual and artistic of Wallonia , ancestor of the Institut Jules Destrée, sign the text Wallonia in alarm in 1947 which warns against the adaptation of the parliamentary seats to the figure of the population which still will reinforce the proportion of Flemish members of Parliament, signs the Accord Schreurs-Roofer.

In October 1955, it belongs to the Standing Committee of the second Walloon cultural Congrès and takes part in work of the Walloon Arts center , created in 1956. It also mobilizes after the General strike of the winter 1960-1961, owner the Journée of Walloon mobilization in 1969, sign the the letter with the king revealing the concern of the Walloons and French-speaking people of 1976 sent for adhesion to a few tens of professors and intellectuals in particular by Marcel Thiry and Jean Rey.
