Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat

Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat , born with Lille the December 29th 1923, is a mathematician and French physician . She is the first woman with being elected with the Academy of Science (France).

Biography

Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat is the girl of the physicist Georges Bruhat. She obtains her baccalaureat in 1941 and gains the second price of physique to the open Competition.

Of 1943 with 1946 it is coed with the National university (ENS) with Sevres and it is received first of its promotion to the aggregation of mathematics the same year. Aggregation enables him to teach with the ENS since 1946. Of 1949 with 1951, it is research assistant with the National center of the scientific research (CNRS) and with this exit its Doctorat science obtains.

It spends the years 1951 and 1952 to the Institute for Advanced Study of Princeton and joined the following year the Faculty of Science of Marseilles. In 1958, it obtains the money medal of CNRS.

From 1958 with 1959, it teaches with the Université of Rheims. In 1960, it is full professor with the Université Pierre and Marie Curie of Paris, then professor emeritus, where it will remain until its retirement in 1992.

She is elected corresponding Academy of Science on March 13rd 1978 and becomes the first elected woman member on May 14th 1979. Of 1980 with 1983, it is the president of the International committee of general relativity and gravitation. In 1985, it is elected member of the American Academy off Arts and Sciences.

It is mother of two girls and a boy.

Work

She is the author of almost two hundred articles. Its work has impacts in mathematics, but also in physics and in particular in Theory of relativity. Some of its discoveries are used in the detectors of gravitational waves which are VIRGO and LIGO.
