Yverdon-the-Baths is a common Suisse and the larger second of the Canton of Vaud, located in the District of Yverdon, of which it is the Chef-lieu.

Geography

To 60 km in the south-west of Bern, with the head of the Neuchâtel Lake, Yverdon is a Ville of human size in the middle of theof Vaud one. Commercial city since the Roman epoch, its center is known for its great place, broadside of the temple, the castle and the town hall. One can see, on this place, the statue of Pestalozzi.

History

Name of Eburodunum at the time of the Roman (in Latin, Quoted of the Yews ), then quickly Yverdon (in Francoprovençal Invèrdon ), the common one changed its name into Yverdon-the-Baths since 1981, recalling that the city is for a long time a thermal center of reputation.

One also found in this city some medals of emperors and the Gallo-Roman boats preserved relatively well.

The left was majority between 1973 and 1985, between 1989 and 1993, between 1997 and 2001 and since 2006. In 2006, the UDC made its entry in the deliberating body and the Greens cumulated their arrival in the town council and obtaining a seat in to the executive.

Sports

The parapente is practiced in the area of Yverdon-the-Baths. It is also possible to be initiated with the art of the Escrime thanks to the Circle of Fencing of Yverdon (CEY). The CEY practices only saber and had in its center, several champions Swiss in various categories.

The most important club of sport of the east city without any doubt Yverdon-Sport FC, the football club of the city which evolves/moves in Challenge League. There exists also the CP Yverdon, the football club of the Portuguese community of Yverdon, the Azzuri Yverdon, that of the Italian community and the Bosna Yverdon, that of the Bosnian community, which evolve/move in the lower leagues.

Among the other sporting clubs, let us quote HC Yverdon-the-Baths, evolves/moves in 1e league (the 3rd Swiss division) of hockey as well as RC Yverdon, as a National league has Rugby.

Personalities

  • Élie Bertrand, Pasteur, geologist, naturalist (1713-1797), it founds the library (1761) as well as the economic company of the city.
  • Benno Besson, actor, director and theater director. Born in Yverdon in 1922.
  • Frederick Haldimand (1718-1791), British governor in Canada, born and died in Yverdon.
  • Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, establishes its school of there 1805 with 1825. The principal place of the city bears from now on its name.
