Yuri
The term yuri (百合 which means “lily literally”, names of plants being often used for the female first names) refers to the homosexual relations between women.
Definition and etymology
It appeared in 1971, of the feather of Ito Bongaku, editor association of the Barazoku , a homosexual magazine for men who indicated the community lesbian of yurizoku (“tribe of lily”) whereas were to them-even barazoku , (“tribe of pinks”). This name was included in many Manga S and Dōjinshi Hentai which then designated the characters lesbians by naming them Yuri or Yuriko . Let us note in the passing that the Japanese lesbians gave up for a long time the use of yurizoku to indicate itself as a community.
In its country of origin, the term yuri does not make distinction. It relates to the sexual relationships as well as one can find in Hentai as a simple intense friendship, a romantic love or a physical desire as one can find some in the mangas shōjo and especially josei or seinen . With the USA, to dissociate origin little reluisante mangas porns, with the purely sexual relations, the term Shōjo-have was invented (in analogy with the Shōnen-have which relates to the male homosexual loves) to refer to the romantic loves between girls. However, this word does not have any reality with the Japan.
In Francophonie, the yuri , as a kind, is often used (and thus in an abusive way) as synonymous with Shōjo-have. It thus excludes the pornography bound for the men and refers to the mangas shōjo , josei and seinen which presents more or less homosexual female relations. So it is not a question of a leading kind, based on a precise assistantship (age and sex), but rather on a set of themes. It would rather be necessary to speak about a sub-genus which would go even until integrating the mangas written by lesbians for an assistantship lesbian published in homosexual magazines (the only true leading category which could exist with its own channels of prépublications).
The yuri in the French-speaking manga
One of the most known couples yuri is that consisted of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune in the series Sailor Moon . Another couple is that which sees a relation developing between Utena Tenjô and Anthy Himemiya in Utena the revolutionary young girl (relation which exists more in film resulting from the series than in the version paper). In francophonie, since Asuka launched in 2004 a dedicated collection, with in particular works of Ebine Yamaji, a homosexual Mangaka, but as with the arrival of Blue of Kiriko Nananan and before the publication of Suppli of Mari Okazaki at Delcourt, one can say as the mangas yuri have from now on really established among in the landscape of the French-speaking Manga.
