The Yucatán is a State located in the south-east of the Mexico on the peninsula of the same name.

Supposed etymology

The word Yucatán would come from a bad interpretation of the Spaniards on their arrival in this populated area of Maya. An anecdote wants that they created this Toponyme by interpreting the cries of the freely Amerindian S: My it ubah than ( We do not include/understand your words ). Another explanation sees in Yucatán the combination of two local words, yuka (= to kill) and yetá (= much), allusion to the fact that the Mayas were exterminated there. None of the two explanations is really satisfactory, and the word preserves its mystery.
