The Yser is a coastal Fleuve of 78 km length. Its source is in France and its mouth in Belgium.

Geography

Course in France

The Yser takes its (or its) source (S) with Buysscheure, passes to Bollezeele, Esquelbecq, Bambecque then crosses the border. Its French course, between its source and the border, is long of approximately thirty kilometers; with 27 m of uneven on this course, the average slope is of 0,9 ‰.

Course in Belgium

In Belgium, the river, Ijzer in Dutch, irrigate the Flanders-Western on a distance of 50 km, in particular the towns of Dixmude and Nieuport, where it is thrown in the the North Sea. On its Belgian course, it irrigates approximately 5% of the territory. It is the only river of Belgium which has there also its mouth, the other rivers, the Meuse and the the Scheldt doing nothing but cross the country.

Affluents

  • the Ieperlee or Yperlee is a Belgian affluent, which takes its source with the Mont Kemmel (Belgium) and is thrown in Yser in the south of Nieuwkapelle.
