You (ethnos group)

The You constitute one of the 56 ethnicities officially identified by the Popular republic of China. The majority of them live in the autonomous Comté you of Huzhu in the east of the province of Qinghai, some in the province of Gansu. They were approximately: 240000 at the end of the 20th century.

You are identified like “Mongour” (Mongolian, also written “Monguor” or “Mongor”) or like “Tsagaan mongghol” (or “Chahan Mongguer”), which means literally Mongolian white. Language

The language of You belongs to the branch Mongolian E of the family of the altaïques Langues. The basic vocabulary is very close to that of the language Mongolian E, but the language is closer to that spoken by the minorities Dongxiang and Bonan. It is not a written language.

Religion

The religion of You is a harmonious mixture of Bouddhisme Tibetan, Taoïsme, and Shamanisme. In many villages You, a Buddhist Temple and a sanctuary coexist. Whereas the buddhist monks are usually seen in the majority of the villages, the priests and the Shamans taoists are extremely not very present and officiates on the whole of the area. The Shaman officiates mainly like medium by fright during the celebration of Nadun.

History

The popular legends among You of the autonomous county of Huzhu tell that the ancestors of You were Mongolian soldiers under the orders of a general of Gengis Khan of the name of Gerilite (or Geretai). They married with Houers, indigenous population of what is now the county of Huzhu. “To hoe” appointed in language Tibetan the wandering shepherds who lived in the north of Tibet.

The Chinese files also say that Mongolian troops made their appearance with Xining (capital current of the province of Qinghai) under the Dynastie Yuan.
