Yossi Beilin
Yossef Beilin says Yossi (in Hebrew: יוסיביילין), born the June 12th 1948, is an Israeli politician of left. Member of Parliament with the Knesset and former minister for Justice, it directs the party Meretz - Yachad. Its name remains associated with the Accords with Oslo with 1993, with the talks of Taba in 2001, with the Initiative of Geneva and the israélo-Palestinian Peace process in general.
Political career
Of 1977 with 2003, Yossi Beilin is member of the workers party of which he is the spokesperson of 1977 to 1984, date on which he becomes government spokesman until 1986, then he occupies a management position at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of 1986 to 1988.
In 1988, it is elected at the Israeli Parliament and is renewed regularly until in 1999. It occupies the functions of vice-Minister of Finances (1988-1990) and of vice-Minister of the Foreign affairs (1992-1995) in the government of Shimon Peres. Follow two more minor ministerial positions in the ministries for the Economy and the budget (in 1995) then in the services of the Prime Minister (in 1996).
From 1996 to 2001, Yossi Beilin is Ministre for Justice. Its image marked on the left does not enable him to appear in an eligible row at the head of the list of the workers party to the Israeli legislative elections of 2003. It leaves the party (and it leaves Shimon Peres of which it always was very near) with Yael Dayan and joined Meretz which receive them in its rows with enthusiasm. Following the elections, it forms the Shachar movement which is not long in amalgamating with Meretz to form the party Yachad of which it takes the direction.
The Israeli public opinion associates the name of Beilin with the israélo-Palestinian Peace process:
- it initiates in 1992 the secret negotiations which led to the Accords of Oslo in 1993, with the support of Shimon Peres;
- it signs in 1995 with Mahmoud Abbas the agreement known under the name of agreement Beilin-Abu Mazen , which gives indications for a permanent solution to the israélo-Palestinian Conflit;
- it directs, of 1992 to 1995, the Israeli delegation in the work groups for multilateral negotiations with the Arab countries;
- it takes part in 2001 in the Sommet of Taba which fails;
- it takes share with the Initiative of Geneva which it signs with Yasser Abd Rabbo to try to start again the search for a solution negotiated with the Palestinians.
Meretz - Yachad loses a seat with the anticipated elections of 2006 and preserves only 5 members of Parliament at the Knesset (of which Beilin).
