Yonsei University

The Université of Yonsei (in Hangeul 연세대학교) is a private Université with Seoul considered as one of best of the South Korea.

It is located in the district Seodaemun-gu.

History

The history of the university begins in 1885 with the creation of the first hospital of the Western type in Korea, the Gwanghyewon by an American missionary , the doctor Horace Allen. The hospital accommodates as of the following year a first class of 16 pupils of what will become the medical school Severance Medical College and Hospital .

The other component of the university is created in 1915, by another American missionary, H.G. Underwood, under the name of Chosun Christian College (Christian University Chosun). The school is renamed in 1917 Yonhi College, then becomes in 1946, the Yonhi University.

In 1957, the Medical Severance College and Hospital and the Yonhi university amalgamate to form the Yonsei university. Today, the campus of the unversity Yonsei is located at Seoul and has appendices with Wonju, Gangwon.

Reputation

The Yonsei university is one of the named schools " SKY" in South Korea. The acronym comes from the initales of the three more prestigious universities of the country: National university of Seoul (S), Korea University (K), and Yonsei (Y). The selection at the entry of these universities is such as in being graduate is regarded as a passport for success in the South Korean company.
