The department of Yonne (89) is a department French. It is crossed, from the south towards north, by the Rivière which gave him its name, the Yonne, affluent of the the Seine, which joined it with Montereau-Fault-Yonne (Seine-et-Marne). The inhabitants of Yonne are called Icaunais and Icaunaises .

The department was created with the
French revolution, the
March 4th 1790 pursuant to the law of the
December 22nd 1789, starting from part of the
province of
Burgundy; of part of the

Orléanais.
