Yoff is extended from the 19 common of district of Dakar (Senegal). It is located at the North-West of the capital.
The city profits from a particular autonomy. There are not a governmental police force and, apparently, few offenses, even more the low level of insecurity of all the communes of Dakar.
The brotherhood Layène - a Muslim community established in the district Yoff Layène where it was born - governs also many aspects of the local life and the large mausoleum of Seydina Limamou Laye, the founder of the brotherhood, constitutes a place of pilgrimage particularly révéré.
At the time of the census of 2002, the number of inhabitants amounted to 53.035. According to the official estimates, the population would count 59.675 people in 2007. The historical quarters and more populated city are Yoff Pêcheurs .
With Yoff Ngaparou and Yoff Layène , they are the districts where the Lébous for the first time were established and where are located the heart of the economy yoffoise with very many companies of fishing and sale and transformation of fish.
The easy district of Yoff Tonghor , also called Yoff-Ocean, extends to the locality the Turn where many expatriates and fortunate Senegaleses are found. It is located at the west of Yoff Pêcheurs, and these two districts are bordered in the south by the airport Léopold Sédar Senghor.
At the east of the historical quarters are located the coastal residential districts of Djily Mbaye , Yoff BCEAO and Yoff Diamalaye .
In second position come the artisanal activities from construction (masonry, joinery, plumbing, electricity) and others (seam, mechanics…).
The administration and industries play only one tiny part in the economic activity.
Every year the APECSY (Association for economic, cultural and social Promotion of Yoff) organizes the Festival of the people of water.
