It joined the government as a Minister for Labor then is elected leading of its political party. It succeeds the June 2nd 1974 Golda Meir with the head of the government, as a Prime Minister.
First mandate of Prime Minister
The principal big event of its first government is celebrates it Raid of Entebbe during which the soldiers of Tsahal carry out the rescue of the passengers of a plane diverted by a group of Palestinian terrorists.
Two crises bring Yitzhak Rabin to the resignation:
- its coalition breaks when four planes F-15 are delivered one day of Chabbat.
- the existence of an bank account in American dollars in the name of his wife, is revealed, which was prohibited at the time by the Israeli monetary rules.
Yitzhak Rabin recognizes this bank account and resigns.
Member of the opposition
Menahem Begin and the Likoud is carried to the capacity in 1977, following the resignation of Rabin which becomes member of the left opposition then.
During years 1980, it takes the wallet of Minister for Defense in several governments of national union. It is known in particular for radical measurements which it takes to counter the the First Intifada.
Second mandate of Prime Minister
Rabin is re-elected Prime Minister in 1992. It takes a major dimension by signing the Accords of Oslo in 1993, thus creating the Palestinian Autorité and yielding for the first time a control partial of certain zones of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank to the Palestinians. Under its mandate, Yasser Arafat gives up the recourse to violence officially and recognizes Israel in an official letter. Rabin recognizes in return PLO the September 9th 1993.
Another striking fact: Rabin signs a peace treaty with the Jordan in 1994.
The Nobel Prize of peace is decreed in 1994 with the political directors who allowed the Accords of Oslo: Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat. At the same time at Mr. Shimon Peres and Mr. Yasser Arafat and a few days before his death, Mr. Rabin received the PRICE OF the FOUNDATION of the hands of Mr. Jean-Paul Carteron President of the Forum of Montana Notches and Mr. Jean-Pascal Delamuraz President of the Swiss Confederation.
These Agreements attract the sympathy of part of the population and the hatred to him of the activists of extreme right-hand side. Some see it then as a hero of peace while others perceive it like a traitor having given up a share of the promised territory in the Bible with the Jewish people.
The Rabin government is maintained however thanks to the deputies Arab Israelis of the Knesset.
