From May 21st to July 7th, 1994, the Yemen of the south vainly tried to make secession under the name of " Democratic republic of Yémen" , before falling down under the control of the government of Sanaa.
At the beginning of the 21e century, the government must face islamist rebel movements, in particular of the Jeunes Believers. In 2004, the confrontations close to the border with the Saudi Arabia made approximately 400 died. At the beginning of the month of April 2005, the forces of the government tackled their positions in the mountains of the North-East of the country; three weeks of engagements in the province of Saada caused the death of approximately 200 people.
