Yellowknife is the capital of the Territoires of the North-West to the Canada since 1967, and the single town of this territory.

Its name comes from the knives ( knife in English) of Cuivre used by the first population of Chipewyans. The current population ethniquement is ethniquement mixed and the government of the territory counts six spoken languages of significant number: the Chipewyan, the Dogrib, the Slavic north, the Slavic south, the English and the French.

In Dogrib language, the city is called Somba K' E (what means “the place where the money is”).

The area was occupied by the Amerindian S since the beginning of the 19th century, but the city really founded at the time of was discovered Or in the years 1930. She shelters a population of more today than: 20000 inhabitants (2006). The local governments, territorial and federal are the largest employers, in front of mining industry.

The city is located on banks of the Big lake of the Slaves, with the mouth of the river Yellowknife.
