Yellowish iris

the yellowish iris ( Iris lutescens ), also called dwarf iris , is a plant belonging to the kind Iris and to the family of the Iridacées. As its name indicates it, its flowers are generally of pale yellow color, but there exist also varieties with flowers violets or blanchâtres, or two-tone. It is a plant the Mediterranean not pushing in theory on the Calcaire, in the dry rocky lawns. It is very cultivated in the gardens. One knows two subspecies of them:

  • subsp. lutescens , most widespread;
  • subsp. will subbiflora (Brot.) D.A.Webb & Chater

Description

Ecology and habitat

long-lived Plant by its rhizome pushing in Mediterranean region, from the Iberian peninsula to the Italy, goes away in North Africa. One especially meets it in the Garrigue S, in places exposed to the sun, at the same time grassy and stony.

General and vegetative morphology

Rhizomateuse, low or small plant herbaceous, with stem reaching to the maximum 35 cm. Sheet S ensiformes evoking blades of sword, generally not exceeding the flowers. Width of the sheets: from 5 to 25 Misters.

Floral morphology

The inflorescence comprises one or two green Fleur S. Spathe at membranous end. The three Tepal S external, generally reflected, carry each one a central beard of yellow hairs. The three internal tepals are set up, often almost as broad as long.

Fruit and seeds

The Fruit is a capsule with three cabins comprising of many seeds.
