Yellow surgeon

The yellow surgeon ( Zebrasoma flavescens ) is a Poisson of sea water of Acanthuridae which saw in the coral reefs Pacifique and Indian Ocean.

It is about very popular like fish of aquarium.

Description

The yellow surgeon presents a laterally compressed body. The adults can reach 20 cm length with a thickness of one or two centimetres. The males are slightly taller than the females but delivered to them, yellow luminous, is identical. The night, before theirs body takes a color sinks with a horizontal white bar, coloring which disappears as soon as the day returns.

Their long frayed muzzle enables them to eat algae deeply hidden in the Corail. As the other surgeons (what gives them their common noun), it presents a spine beside the tail.

Food mode

The yellow surgeon is primarily herbivorous but eats time with others of the Crevette S or small animals.

Distribution and habitats

One generally finds it in not very deep reefs, from -2 to -46 m, in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, in the west of Hawaii and the east of the Japan.

Aquariophilie

The yellow surgeon is a usually preserved fish of sea. Their size out of aquarium can go up to 25 cm but in general it remains in the neighborhoods of 15 cm. It needs an aquarium of at least 300 L but will be more at ease in a larger vat. Being herbivorous, it is relatively easy to nourish. It is usually very robust, but like the other surgeons is sensitive to the Ichtiophthiriose and other common sea water diseases. It is an semi-aggressive fish but that one can usually maintain with other similar fish however it is not possible to keep it with other yellow surgeons (or other surgeons of similar form or size) or then they should be kept in sufficient quantity (six or seven individuals).

Out of Community aquarium it can be maintained with fish such as Apogon fleurieu, large fish - clowns, rascasse, Anguille S, or other surgeons of different pace such as Acanthurus achilles or Paracanthurus hepatus . It does not attack the invertebrates and can thus be placed in an aquarium of reef.
