The Yellow Magic Orchestra is a Japanese group of Electro pop formed in 1978.

The principal members of the group are Haruomi Hosono (low), Yukihiro Takahashi (battery) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (keyboards).

The group was at the beginning a project solo of Hosono, the two other members having been recruited as musicians. The idea was to design an album amalgamating the Exotica orientalist (see their resumption of Firecracker of Martin Denny) with modern electronic instruments. The first album quickly becomes very popular.

Abundantly using the synthetizers, the samplers and the music from the computers which became accessible, their influence extended beyond Japan. One regards the group as pioneers of the electronic music; their music continues to be remixée and samplée by contemporary artists.

The group ceases its activity in 1984, each of the three members continuing a career solo.

the group is more known in Japan under accronyme YMO

With the beginning of the year 90 Hosono and Takeshi met in a project called " Show" sketch;.
