Events

  • the Chevaliers Teutoniques create a State monastico-soldier independent of the Holy roman Empire. They elect with life a large Master who has row of prince of empire and control surface surrounded by five dignitaries. The country is divided into twenty districts, bailliages with the head of which a commander is who takes care that the peasants serfs fulfill their obligations. The order, which can constantly recruit in Germany and Italy, becomes one of the first European military powers. German peasants are recruited to occupy the areas of which population at summer driven out or killed. Commercial contacts are establishes with the Hanse starting from Elbing.

  • Appearance of the Kogge (Cogue), ship whose load capacity is from eight to ten times those of the former ships. Four large vessels of this type are announced in the port of Cologne for the transport of the crusaders. It is a squat ship measuring about thirty meters length on seven broad, with a draft of three meters. Equipped with a single sail, it is relatively handy, able to advance against the wind, and rapid, especially when it is equipped with a Gouvernail of stern post, starting from the beginning of the 13th century. Probably developed by the clippings, it par excellence becomes the Hanseatic ship of XIIIe at the 14th century, competed with at the 14th century by the Hourque (holk), of a capacity even more important.
