Year of physics

Exactly hundred years after the publication of revolutionary work of Albert Einstein, the year 2005 was selected to celebrate the physical sciences in the whole world, on the initiative of the International union of physics pure and applied (IUPAP) and of the European physical society (EPS). On three fundamental topics - the quantum of light, the Relativity and the Brownian Movement - this work indeed opened the way with practically all the developments of the Physique of the twentieth century.

The year 2005 was declared " world year of the physique" by the UNESCO and " international year of the physique" by UNO. Beyond the commemoration of a great figure of the physique of the twentieth century, the objective of this action was also to make known with audience the largest possible progress, the importance and the stakes of this large side of science.

Organization in France

Placed in France under the responsibility of an High committee of sponsorship (see opposite), the demonstrations are coordinated by a steering committee which brings together representatives of the French company of physics, delegated minister with Research and new technologies and research organizations.

Objectives of the demonstration

  • To improve the daily newspaper and to answer the challenges of the company

Beyond the commemoration of work of Einstein, it is a question of making known the projections and the importance of the Physique and its applications. It was a little quickly forgotten that the Transistor S, the Ordinateur S, the Laser S and the Medical imagery are pure products of the last decades of basic research in the laboratories of Physique, where are worked out today new materials and information technologies of tomorrow. The Physique also works to find solutions with the main issues of our company: energy, Environment, Health.

  • to inform and give pleasure by learning from the Physical

The year 2005 was the occasion to think of the image that the Physique gives itself. It is a matter considered difficult, whose training supposes the control of tools Mathématiques. To fight the relative current disinterest in youth, in particular female, for the scientific careers is a national and even world stake.

  • To bring answers to the great interrogations of research

The year 2005 was also the occasion of launching a prospective debate on the great stakes of research. Entirely new tracks are opened by spectacular progress in the infinitely small of the particles just like in the infinitely great of cosmos or the infinitely complex one of the states of the Matière. There are today great enigmas touching in the middle of the fundamental laws of the Univers, the matter and the life. The history of the Sciences accustomed us to the unforeseen bounces: the 21e century should also hold many surprises.

  • To cultivate and listen to the public, to contribute to progress in the world

The debates will relate to finally the social stakes which accompany the practice by the Physique and in a more general way the Science. Its extraordinary projections are not always perceived like progress, even in the democratic society based on rationality. The Physical and its applications will have a role increasingly important to play in the progression necessary of the developing countries. The physicists should not underestimate their ethical responsibilities. A reflection must associate all the actors of the field of the Physique to the representatives of the company.
