Ye or E (capital Е, tiny е) is a letter of the Cyrillic alphabet.

Linguistics

• In Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serb and Ukrainian, it is called E and represents a former higher Mid vowel nonround (/e/ in API) or a former lower Mid vowel nonround ().
• In Belorusse and Russian, it is called Ye and is a vowel palatalizing: it palatalizes the letter which precedes it. The sound which it represents is not on the other hand different from that met into Bulgarian or Ukrainian.

History

Diacritic

Letter Е perhaps provided with Diacritic S in the writing of a certain number of languages using the Cyrillic alphabet:

• Ӗ : Short Е with (Chuvash)

• Ё: Yo, Е with Dieresis (Russian, Belorusse, Chuvash, Kazakh, Mongolian)

Curiosity

The Russian adjectival form длинношеее (“with the long neck”, with the neutral) comprises three е consecutive.
