Yeóryos Papadópoulos

Yeóryos Papadópoulos (in Greek Γεώργιος Παπαδόπουλος ) was born the May 5th 1919 and deceased the June 27th 1999. It belonged to the coup d'etat of 1967, and became Greek Prime Minister of 1967 with 1974.

Biography

Second lieutenant at the beginning of the Second world war, it fights the Italian army and Wehrmacht. When Greece is overcome in 1941, he refuses to engage in resistance by anticommunism, and takes part in the cabinet “Patras Food Supply Office”, collaborator.

It trains a militia, “Evzones Battalions”, charged to stop the members of the ELAS, a communist organization of resistance.

In 1944, he becomes lieutenant, and joined England. In 1946, he became captain. In 1949, during the Greek Civil war he became major.

After having followed a formation to the CIA in 1953, it directs the secret maltreatment (KYP) of 1959 to 1964.

In 1956, it takes part in an coup attempt of State against Paul {{Ier}} of Greece, and in 1958, it creates the military office with the general Gogousis. This association enabled him to make the coup d'etat of 1967 with the colonel Stylianos Patakos and the general Dimitrios Ioannidis. This same year it reaches the rank of colonel.

August 13rd, 1968, it is the target of an attack missed by Aléxandros Panagoúlis.

October 21st, 1972, it autoproclame Regent of Greece, succeeding Georgios Zoitakis.

During the Dictatorship of the colonels, it restores the martial law, the censure, launches arrests of mass in the name of the fight against Communism. It promotes then the role of the orthodoxe Église in policy which brings its soutien.
to him June 1st, 1973, it abolishes monarchy and becomes president after a plebiscite.

November 25th, 1973, its government is reversed by the Ioannidis general. In 1974, after the restoration of the parliamentary system, he is considered and condemned for high treason with respect to the Greece and of his people. He passes the end of his life in prison. In 1999, he dies of one cancer at the 80 years age.
