Yaounde

Yaounde , called the city with the seven hills, is the capital of the Cameroun since 1922. Populated: 1200000  inhabitants, it is, after Douala, the second town of this State of the central Africa. It is also the chief town of the province of the Center and the department of the Mfoundi.

Geography

The town of Yaounde was established on a network of hills dominated by the Mont Fébé which culminates with: 1060  meters. The various districts, disseminated in an anarchistic way, leave an important place with the food crops and the vegetation.

History

Yaounde was founded in 1889 like military station German on a hill of the country Ewondo. It developed thanks to German tradesmen, as bases for the trade of the Ivoire. It was occupied by Belgian troops during the First World War, before being placed under French protectorate.

Its growth was initially rather slow, the rural migration privileging Douala, then accelerated as of 1957 because of the crisis of the Cacao and the interior disorders concerning mainly the area of Douala.

Population

The town of Yaounde extends on 304  km ² and shelters an estimated population, in 2002, with: 1729800  inhabitants, is an average density of: 5691  inhabitants by km ² (CIPRE, 2002). The rate of urbanization in Cameroun last east of 378  % in 1987 with 472  % in 1997 (MINEFI, 1997) and it is projected that in 2010, two Cameronians out of three will live downtown (PNGE). The annual growth of the population is estimated at 68  %.

Legal mode of the city

The government, by the law n° 87-15 of July 15th, 1987, transformed Yaounde into urban community (eq. district urban to mode special ). This derogatory mode removes the function of mayor to the profit of a delegate of the government named by the presidency.

The constitutional law of January 18th 1996 modifies the mode of the urban community , which remains directed by a delegate of the government, but which also creates 6 urban communities of district (Yaounde I, II, III, IV, V and VI) equipped with elected municipal councils.

Economy

Yaounde is before a a whole tertiary city. Some industries however are counted: breweries, sawmills, joineries, tobacco, paper mills, mechanics, and construction materials.

Yaounde is served by the International airport of Yaounde-Nsimalen.
